Well, I finally pulled the trigger on SD3 and I’m absolutely blown away! It’s a massive step up in sound quality and realism over AD2. Lately, however, I’ve been increasingly interested in using real drum sounds in a modern, highly produced context and I wanted more convincing and engaging results than I got with AD2. It seemed like a lot of money (and drive space!) for something I’d only use occasionally. I held off buying Superior Drummer due to my investment in AD and the fact that I use more electronic drums than acoustic drums.
It also appears that development on Addictive Drums stopped years ago. I’d describe it as a little flat and sterile - closer to a good drum machine than a real drummer. I have most of the AdPaks including Fairfax 1 & 2 but I’ve never been satisfied with the sound. It really depends on what you want to achieve. A lot of people are fine with the DAW factory drums, NI Drums, BFD, or even Toontracks EZ Drummer. Then if you still have questions, ask here.Ĭorrect on the money. Have you gone to their website to learn and watch the SD3 features? Do your research by going to Toontracks SD3 website and learning about the features. But you will spend some time learning how to use additional features. Look at the Toontrack mixer and how it's laid out. Understand? Open a kit and then substitute a high tom from another kit, then open the presets for that high tom to adjust. Just one area consider drum bleed and all the possible combinations. More involved to adjust to your specific detailed sonic objectives, yes. You get great sounds from even the stock SDX libraries, one of them recorded by George Massenburg.
Of course $$$ tooMore involved to get good sounds? No. Ok so sounds like SD3 sounds better but, more BFDtime consuming and more involved to get good sounds. It really depends on your genre, how important flexibility is for you, and how much of an investment you consider drums to be for whatever you do. Via MIDI, can integrate Battery with SD3 and even with Maschine if necessary. This includes NI drums that work in Kontakt. The others I have used, excluding their instant sounds, are mostly a joke as far as detail programming. Personally considering all the EZX and SDX extensions I have collected over the years, a "certain sound" missing has never happened. If you are after a particular drum or cymbal sound, and you have extensively searched, maybe that's a reason to use something else. That is always why it's priced the way it is. There is a lot of programming detail in there compared to the competition. To go further than that, it takes some time because IMO SD3 is the absolute best there is as far as features/flexibility. If you have used EZ Drummer, its very easy use the basics with SD3.
